What Is a Glove Port? Types, Sizes and Applications

A glove port provides a secure point of access into a glove box, isolator or containment system, allowing an operator to handle materials inside the enclosure while maintaining separation from the controlled environment.

Glove ports are used across industries including nuclear, pharmaceutical, laboratory, research and life sciences, where protecting the operator, the process or both can be critical.

They are available in different shapes, sizes and materials, and choosing the correct glove port depends on factors including the application, enclosure design, required reach and compatible glove system.

In this guide, we look at how glove ports work, the different types available and the key considerations when specifying a glove port.

What is a glove port?

A glove port is a fitting incorporated into the wall or screen of a glove box, isolator or other containment system.

A specialist glove, gauntlet or sleeve system is attached securely to the port. The operator can then insert their hand and arm into the glove from outside the enclosure and manipulate materials inside without directly entering the controlled environment.

The glove port therefore acts as an interface between the operator and the enclosed workspace.

Depending on the system, glove ports can be used to help protect operators from potentially hazardous materials, prevent external contamination from reaching sensitive processes or provide separation in both directions.

How does a glove port work?

A glove port is mounted securely to the screen or wall of a containment system, creating an opening through which the operator can work.

The glove or sleeve is attached to the port and retained securely to help maintain the integrity of the system.

The precise method of installation varies according to the glove port design. Components can include securing rings, gaskets, retaining grooves, O rings and fixing screws.

The glove itself must also be compatible with the dimensions and design of the port.

The result is a working interface that allows an operator to reach into the enclosure while remaining physically separated from its contents.

Where are glove ports used?

Glove ports can be incorporated into many types of controlled environment and containment equipment.

Common applications include:

  • Glove boxes
  • Isolators
  • Containment systems
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Pharmaceutical processing equipment
  • Nuclear handling systems
  • Research environments
  • Specialist industrial equipment

The requirements of each application can vary considerably. The size, shape, material and configuration of the glove port should therefore be considered as part of the design of the complete containment system.

What are the different types of glove port?

Several glove port configurations are available to suit different applications.

Circular glove ports

Circular glove ports are one of the most established configurations and are widely used across controlled environments.

MIP manufactures 150mm and 192mm circular glove ports as standard. These are manufactured from compression moulded phenolic resin and incorporate two retaining grooves to securely locate the beaded cuff of a compatible glove.

Larger 250mm and 305mm circular ports are also available and can be used as transfer ports or where additional manoeuvrability is required.

Depending on the application, larger ports can be manufactured using materials including food safe plastics, antistatic plastics and stainless steel.

Oval glove ports

Oval glove ports provide a larger working aperture and can offer increased freedom of movement for the operator.

The shape can be particularly useful where the required range of arm movement would be restricted by a conventional circular opening.

MIP manufactures both internal and external oval glove port configurations, including 150mm x 250mm and larger 200mm x 400mm options.

Internal oval glove ports

An internal oval glove port is designed to be installed from the inside of the enclosure screen.

MIP’s 150mm x 250mm internal oval port is designed to create a smooth, flush internal finish. This can be advantageous in applications where cleanability and ease of use within the enclosure are important considerations.

The assembly incorporates the port, pressure ring, gasket and appropriate fixings to create a secure installation.

External oval glove ports

External oval ports are mounted differently and can provide an alternative where the construction of the enclosure makes an internal mounting arrangement unsuitable.

They can also provide additional reach into the containment area.

MIP manufactures external oval ports in 150mm x 250mm and 200mm x 400mm configurations, with bespoke alternatives available for specialist requirements.

Extended glove ports

An extended glove port projects further from the enclosure than a conventional port.

This can be useful where additional reach, positioning or clearance is required because of the design of the containment system or the equipment located inside it.

As with any glove port, the dimensions and configuration should be considered alongside operator ergonomics and the intended working area.

Iris ports

Iris ports provide another method of controlled access into an enclosure.

Rather than functioning solely as a conventional fixed glove port, an iris arrangement can provide a flexible opening for applications where temporary access or different working requirements need to be accommodated.

The suitability of an iris port will depend on the particular containment system and the level of separation required.

What size glove port do I need?

The correct glove port size depends on the application, enclosure and required range of movement.

MIP’s standard circular glove port range includes 150mm and 192mm ports, with larger 250mm and 305mm circular ports available where a larger opening is required.

Oval configurations include 150mm x 250mm and 200mm x 400mm options.

However, port diameter alone should not determine the specification.

The person designing or specifying the system should also consider the required reach, working position, equipment inside the enclosure, screen construction and compatible glove or sleeve system.

Circular or oval glove ports: which should you choose?

Neither configuration is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on the application.

Circular ports provide a proven and straightforward solution for many conventional glove box applications.

Oval ports provide a different range of movement and can be advantageous where greater vertical or lateral movement is required.

The position of the ports within the enclosure is equally important. A correctly sized port in the wrong position can make working inside the glove box unnecessarily difficult.

For bespoke containment systems, glove port type, size and position should therefore ideally be considered during the design stage rather than added as an afterthought.

What materials are glove ports made from?

Material selection depends on the environment in which the port will operate.

MIP’s standard 150mm and 192mm circular glove ports are manufactured from compression moulded phenolic resin, which provides good mechanical strength, chemical resistance and durability.

MIP’s standard oval glove ports are manufactured using acetal, with other materials available for particular applications.

Larger circular ports can also be manufactured using materials such as food safe plastics, antistatic plastics and stainless steel.

When specifying the material, factors such as chemical exposure, cleanability, mechanical demands, electrical properties and the wider operating environment should be considered.

Why is glove compatibility important?

A glove port cannot be considered separately from the glove or sleeve that will be fitted to it.

The glove needs to be the correct size and designed to attach securely to the port.

Different glove materials also offer different levels of chemical resistance, mechanical protection, flexibility and permeability.

Common glove box glove materials include neoprene, latex, butyl, nitrile, CSM and EPDM.

The correct combination of glove and glove port therefore depends on both the physical dimensions of the system and the materials or processes being handled.

Can glove ports be manufactured to bespoke specifications?

Yes.

Standard glove ports are suitable for many applications, but specialist containment projects may require different dimensions, materials or design features.

A bespoke glove port may be appropriate where an existing enclosure uses a non standard opening, a particular material is required or the working environment creates unusual operational requirements.

MIP can manufacture glove ports to bespoke specifications, including alternative materials, dimensions and application specific features.

What should you consider when specifying a glove port?

Before selecting a glove port, consider the complete application rather than the port in isolation.

Important factors include the type of containment system, dimensions of the enclosure, thickness and material of the mounting screen, required working area, position of the operator, substances being handled and the glove material required.

It is also important to consider maintenance and replacement requirements. Gloves are consumable components, so the system should allow them to be inspected and replaced safely in accordance with the procedures for the particular application.

Where the requirements are unusual, discussing the application with an experienced manufacturer during the design stage can help ensure that the port, glove and enclosure work effectively as a complete system.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of a glove port?

A glove port allows an operator to access and manipulate materials inside a glove box, isolator or containment system using an attached glove or sleeve while maintaining physical separation from the internal environment.

What sizes do glove ports come in?

Glove ports are available in several standard sizes. MIP manufactures standard circular ports in 150mm and 192mm sizes, larger circular ports in 250mm and 305mm sizes and oval configurations including 150mm x 250mm and 200mm x 400mm.

Bespoke dimensions can also be manufactured for specialist applications.

What is the difference between a circular and oval glove port?

The principal difference is the shape and resulting working aperture. Circular ports are widely used for conventional glove box applications, while oval ports can provide a different range of movement and may be better suited to applications requiring greater manoeuvrability.

Can a glove port be added to an existing glove box?

Potentially, although this will depend on the design, material and construction of the existing enclosure. The dimensions, mounting arrangement and structural requirements should be assessed before modifying a containment system.

Do glove ports include gloves?

A glove port and glove are separate components, although they are designed to work together as part of the complete containment system. The correct glove size and material should be selected for the port and application.

Are bespoke glove ports available?

Yes. Where a standard glove port is unsuitable, bespoke ports can be manufactured using alternative dimensions, materials and features to meet specific project requirements.
